Parents of The Covenant School shooting victims share emotional stories

Parents of students who attend The Covenant School in Nashville have created two nonprofits aimed at protecting children from gun violence.

Three 9-year-old students and three staff members were murdered at the school during a mass shooting on March 27, 2023. On Thursday, the families involved in the creation of the nonprofits will take to the steps of the Tennessee State Capitol to announce the two nonprofits which will be called Covenant Families for Brighter Tomorrows and Covenant Families Action Fund.

According to a media release by the groups, Covenant Families for Brighter Tomorrows is a 501(c)3 organization comprised of Covenant parents, staff, and survivors. The nonprofit will provide education on the impact and prevention of school shootings and improve mental health support.

The Covenant Families Action Fund is a 501(c)3 which will focus on legislative changes to ensure the safety of children and staff in schools.

The release states “The families of The Covenant School have a wide range of political views but are united in their faith and shared desire to protect their children and all children in Tennessee from experiencing anything like what happened in March 2023. The two nonprofits are both dedicated to working with anyone who will respect all political and ideological viewpoints while taking meaningful steps to protect children. Both Covenant Families for Brighter Tomorrows and the Covenant Families Action Fund appreciate the decision by Governor Bill Lee to convene a special session of the state legislature in August to respond to overwhelming calls for action on gun violence prevention.”
