New third grade retention law in Tennessee; 3rd graders getting held back

New rules went into effect this week surrounding Tennessee’s controversial third grade retention law.

The law says third grade students are at risk of getting held back if they do not pass the state reading test. Students must take mandatory summer school and/or tutoring the following school year to avoid getting held back.

“While I appreciate the concern of the lawmakers, I definitely think it’s an overstep, or an overreach for them to start making decisions about our children when they’re just a number on the page,” parent Anna Sturm said.

A joint government operations committee passed new rules last week surrounding the law which outlines an appeal process for parents.
