Man in Custody for Domestic-Related Shooting that Critically Wounded His Ex-Girlfriend

Nashvillian James Leggett, 27, is in custody for this afternoon’s domestic-related shooting of his ex-girlfriend and her father at the family’s Vanna Court home in Antioch that left the woman, Michaela Carter, 24, in extremely critical condition.

The investigation to this point shows that Leggett kicked in the door of the home and opened fire, wounding Carter in the chest and leg. Her father, Mbuyi Tshibangu, 46, suffered wounds to the jaw and hand. He is in non-critical condition.

Leggett fled the home into a wooded area after the gunfire. He surrendered as South Precinct officers set up a perimeter.

At the time of the shooting, Leggett was under an active order of protection obtained by Carter. The MNPD’s Domestic Violence Division is leading this investigation.
