Man Arrested for November 26 Murder on Jones Avenue

The man responsible for the shooting death of Jadon Simon, 34, outside of the Lucky 7 gas station on Jones Avenue the day after Thanksgiving has been identified and arrested. Melvin Nettles, 57, was taken into custody by Specialized Investigations Division TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) detectives Monday afternoon at a residence on Percy Priest Drive on an unrelated outstanding warrant for motor vehicle theft prior to being questioned by the Homicide Unit.

Upon questioning, Nettles admitted to shooting Simon with a 9mm pistol after getting into a confrontation with him. Nettles continued firing at Simon’s Chevrolet HHR as he attempted to leave the scene. Simon’s children, ages 4 and 11, were inside the car at the time. The Chevrolet came to a stop at the intersection of Douglas and Jones Avenues where the children jumped out and hid nearby.

Nettles then approached the Chevrolet, removed Simon from the vehicle and drove it away from the scene.

Tips to Crime Stoppers and other information led detectives to identify Nettles as the suspected shooter.

Nettles was charged with criminal homicide, carjacking, two counts of aggravated assault, being a felon in possession of a weapon and theft of a vehicle. He is being held on a $120,000 bond.
