Auto workers strike; UAW Strike, how it will impact you

A historic auto workers union strike could reach workers in Middle Tennessee.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) are on strike against the Big Three car makers: Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. It’s the first time in history the union is striking against all three companies simultaneously.

UAW members from assembly plants across the US walked out in protest early Friday morning after they failed to reach a new contract agreement with the Big Three.

The UAW is demanding higher pay and better benefits, including a 36 percent raise over four years, a reinstatement of pension for new employees, and a 32-hour work week with 40 hours paid.

Ford and GM have offered 20 percent pay increases and Stellantis has offered 17 and a half percent. A top scale assembly plant worker earns about $32 an hour now.

The car companies say they are negotiating in good faith but can’t afford to meet all union demands.
